Crushers and grinders are a category of machinery utilized in mining, construction, metallurgy, chemical and quarry industries for the purpose of size reduction and freeing the recoverable minerals from the host rock. They are often used in conjunction with other mineral processing machinery to form a part of an open or closed processing circuit. Crushers are generally used initially to reduce material feed to a more manageable size for the rest of the circuit. Most crushers have a high reduction ratio and when combined with a screen, yield a uniform product. Crushers can generally have a large feeding cavity and smaller discharge outlet which means they can accept a wide range of feed size.
Grinding machines are generally utilized after the material has already been crushed, further reducing the size to a fine powder. Grinding machines such as ball mills, rod mills and hammer mills can be configured to produce a fine uniform end product (overflow mill) or a coarser end product (grate mill). These machines are all highly configurable based on the input size, compressive strength and required particle size.
